EQUIPMENT - Flake SortTM
Overview
The world's first sorting sysytem designed for industrial feed streams of polymer flakes or pellets.
Combining a leading edge computerized process and infrared spectroscopic detection, the FlakeSort scans and classifies high volumes of polymer flakes or pellets using proprietary high-speed identification algorithms.
Application
The NRT FlakeSort is the worlds first sorting system designed to make highly accurate, polymer-specific identifications of small particles while sorting industrial feed streams of polymer flakes or pellets. A typical application is the detection and removal of PVC contaminates in the processing of PET flakes for recycling.
Technology
In 1997, the U.S. EPA selected NRT to develop a small particle polymer-specific sorting technology in response to industry needs. After two years of intensive development and field testing, NRT developed the FlakeSort, an industrial duty sorting system. Combining a leading edge computerized process and infrared spectroscopic detection, the FlakeSort scans and classifies high volumes of polymer flakes or pellets using proprietary high-speed identification algorithms.
The process employs precision air jet ejection to sort particles of a selected polymer or polymers from the feed stream using a binary sort approach. This process achieves high precision sorting and low product loss, even at industrial feed-rates. The use of new high-speed, polymer-specific, infrared spectroscopic sensing technology provides significantly improved performance over nonspecific technologies such as x-ray based systems.
